Volunteering at Safety Town, a collaboration between Akron Children’s Hospital and Goodyear’s Global Week of Volunteering, allowed us to make a tangible impact on our community by fitting children with bicycle helmets.
Safety Town, hosted at Waite Elementary School, is an interactive program for children aged four to five, preparing them for kindergarten with essential safety knowledge and skills. During our volunteering, we focused on fitting children with properly sized bicycle helmets, emphasizing the importance of helmet usage.
With patience and care, we educated the children about wearing helmets and demonstrated proper techniques. We encouraged them to develop a lifelong habit of helmet usage, even for short rides. The children’s joy and enthusiasm as they proudly wore their new helmets were incredibly rewarding.
Collaborating with other volunteers, including teachers, parents, and community members, we created an environment where children felt supported in prioritizing their safety.
We are grateful to Goodyear for organizing the Global Week of Volunteering and to Akron Children’s Hospital for partnering in this initiative. Their support enabled us to contribute to child safety and make a positive difference.
In conclusion, our volunteering experience at Safety Town allowed us to promote child safety by fitting them with bicycle helmets. Through education and community involvement, we are committed to creating a safer future for generations to come.
