Hey, it’s Wes and Chanda, and welcome to DinkLife! We’re here at the John S. Knight Center in downtown Akron, Ohio, for the Akron Children’s Hospital Annual Tree Festival. This festive tradition, going strong for about 42 years, holds a special place in our hearts. Back in the ancient days of high school, Chanda’s choir used to perform here, making it a yearly family tradition.
The festival is a heartwarming event where companies and individuals volunteer to donate fully decorated Christmas trees, which are then sold to raise funds for Akron Children’s Hospital—a cause close to Chanda’s heart as a former employee of the hospital. The event, temporarily halted during the pandemic, has bounced back stronger than ever, with $270,000 donated in 2022 alone, contributing to a staggering $7 million raised since its inception in 1982.
We decided to take you along with us to explore the dazzling array of trees, each telling its unique story. From Galas to raffles, this event offers more than just a feast for the eyes—it’s a chance to contribute to a 501(c) nonprofit dedicated to patient care programs, education, and research. And who knows, maybe this is the year we finally win something in the raffle! So, come with us as we soak in the holiday spirit and showcase the creativity and generosity on display at the Holiday Tree Festival.
As we walk through the festive wonderland of trees, wreaths, and unique decorations, we can’t help but marvel at the diversity of themes—from nostalgic Barbie collections to quirky science trees and even a tree dedicated to babies who spent time in the NICU. The community’s effort is palpable, with each tree telling a story and contributing to the hospital’s noble cause.
The festival doesn’t just end with the visual spectacle; it continues with raffles for elaborately themed trees, adding an extra layer of excitement. Even though our luck in winning something has eluded us so far, the joy of being part of this charitable event is reward enough.
We wrap up our visit, leaving the bustling festival with hearts full of holiday cheer. The Akron Children’s Hospital Annual Tree Festival is more than just a tradition—it’s a testament to the community’s generosity and the power of coming together for a meaningful cause. So, whether you’re a local or just passing through during this festive season, the Holiday Tree Festival at the John S. Knight Center is a must-visit, promising not only a visual feast but also a chance to make a positive impact on the lives of others.
