Tips on Driving in Europe as a Tourist

Hey everyone, it’s Wes and Chanda, and we’re currently on a European road trip, leaving the Netherlands and making our way to Germany. We thought we’d share some tips on driving in Europe, especially if it’s your first time. Firstly, driving is on the same side of the road as in the US, but the speed limits are strictly enforced, so don’t even think about speeding. One cool feature is that your dashboard will notify you when the speed limit changes, making it easier to stay within the rules.

A crucial rule to remember is that the left lane is strictly for passing, unlike in the States where people often cruise in it. This can get you in trouble and result in a ticket. Another interesting difference is that semis stick to the far-right lanes, following the posted speed limits. Gas stations can be a bit tricky, as you usually pay after filling up, and everything is measured in liters, not gallons. We recommend learning the basics before you panic at the pump.

Additionally, be aware of changing speed limits during specific hours, as well as unique road signs that might be unfamiliar. Some highways have unlimited speed limits (marked by three slashes), but the average speed is around 90 mph. Lastly, stay calm and don’t panic – driving in Europe might have its quirks, but with a little preparation, you can enjoy the scenic routes without stress. Happy driving!
