Hey, it’s Wes and Jay, and welcome to DinkLife! Today, we found ourselves at the Historical Leland Castle and Museum, right by Mason, Ohio, just a stone’s throw from Kings Island – about 10 minutes away. It’s the last day of the year, and we’ve stumbled upon this place with an entrance fee of only five bucks. Honestly, we don’t have a clue about what’s inside, but it’s open from 11:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. every day, except holidays. In winter, it’s Friday, Saturday, and Sunday, but in summer, it’s open daily. Intrigued? Well, so are we. Join us on this adventure!
The road leading to the castle is somewhat eerie, and as we navigate through, it feels like a scene out of a suspenseful movie. There’s a slight turn here, a steep climb there, and finally, we arrive at our destination – a castle in Ohio, nestled by the Little Miami River. The castle is a curious sight, constructed by one man’s hands over half a century ago. Harry, inspired by the noble knights of medieval times, dedicated 22,000 hours of his life to build this fortress. After retiring in 1955, he even moved into the castle to ensure its completion.
Throughout the castle, over 35,000 milk carton bricks form the foundation. Harry’s ingenuity in using milk cartons as forms for concrete bricks is truly impressive. He crafted doors with intricate details, a chapel-like room, and even a dungeon. The castle is a testament to one man’s dedication and the support of friends, Boy Scouts, and others who contributed to its creation. It’s a hidden gem, and for a mere $5, we got a glimpse into the passion and effort that went into building this extraordinary place.
As we explored the castle, we marveled at its grandeur and the meticulous details within. From a knight’s room adorned with swords to a cozy fireplace, the castle tells a story of creativity and perseverance. The journey through its halls, with unexpected turns and surprises, left us fascinated. So, if you find yourself in the area, take a detour to the Leland Castle – it’s a cool place to stop by. As we always say in DinkLife, whatever you decide to do, just get out there and do it. And, by the way, maybe avoid snowy days on this slightly intimidating road. Trust us, it’s a bit on the scary side!
