Exploring Minds: Journey Through Akron’s National Museum of Psychology!

Hey, it’s Wes and Jay, and welcome to DinkLife! Today, we found ourselves at the National Museum of Psychology at the University of Akron. While it was a new experience for me, Jay had been here once before and had some positive memories to share. The museum’s presence seemed relatively recent, only a couple of years predating the pandemic.

After navigating the parking situation (free on Saturdays, lucky for us!), we embarked on our museum journey. From the get-go, the exhibits delved into the historical perceptions of mental illness, ranging from supernatural beliefs to the dawn of medical understanding. It was eye-opening to see artifacts like straight jackets, relics of a bygone era’s approach to mental health.

As we progressed through the museum’s sections, interactive displays caught our attention. Testing our memory and coordination, we found ourselves comparing our scores to those of none other than Babe Ruth, a surprising twist in a museum primarily focused on psychology. The museum’s attention to detail extended to its temporary exhibits, offering insights into past practices and contemporary interpretations of mental health care.

One highlight was the home section, where we pondered the aesthetics of different living spaces and we also explored a vast collection of postcards on the 4th floor. It was a reminder of the ever-evolving nature of psychological understanding and societal norms. Despite spending nearly two hours immersed in the museum’s offerings, we left feeling enriched and eager to explore more.

Thanks for joining us on this journey through the National Museum of Psychology. As always, whatever you decide to do, just get out there and do it!
