Hey, it’s Wes and Chanda, and welcome to DinkLife! Today, we find ourselves in West Mifflin, PA, at Kennywood Amusement Park, about two hours from our house. It’s funny because I grew up around here, but I didn’t even know about this park until college. I guess that’s because we had Geauga Lake nearby, which sadly closed, leaving Kennywood as the only spot with that nostalgic, old-school feel in the area. Surprisingly, despite being only 30 minutes farther than Cedar Point, many of my school friends had never heard of it either.
Anyway, we love it here and have visited four or five times since we have been together. Today, on May 18th, the park isn’t busy at all, and we snagged half-price tickets. Fortunately, the low crowd levels mean we won’t need any Express passes to skip lines. Not that we’re opposed to them, but it’s nice not to need them today.
We jump into the Old Mill ride, which recently returned to its original Western shootout theme, a refreshing change from its previous Garfield theme. Then, we brave the classic Thunderbolt, enjoying its roller-coaster nostalgia. Ghostwood Estate’s spooky shooting gallery, with its laser-shooting action, adds some fun.
Next, we hop onto Black Widow, a massive spinning top ride. The Exterminator, a wild mouse indoor coaster, delivers some unexpected twists and turns, and a quick ride on Phantom’s Revenge provides breathtaking views of the park.
As we explore, we share our experiences and observations. We enjoy craft beers at Jitters Pub, note the park’s cleanliness, friendly staff, and the unfortunate closure of some attractions like Steel Curtain. Despite the limited merchandise selection, we recommend Kennywood for its family-friendly atmosphere and nostalgic charm.
Finally, as the day winds down, we reflect on our time here, appreciating the laid-back pace and the ease of getting around. We didn’t need a full day to cover everything.. So, whether you’re a thrill-seeker or just looking for some old-school fun, Kennywood is definitely worth a visit. Just remember, whatever you decide to do, get out there and do it!
