Essential Tips for Exploring London: What’s Changed Since Our Last Visit!

Hey, it’s Wes and Chanda from DinkLife! We were recently at the Lucas Arms Pub in London, just a short walk from our hotel. Since they serve a traditional English Sunday roast only on Sundays, we made it a point to stop in and enjoy the experience. This was actually our second time visiting this pub, and we’ve loved it each time. While we were here, we thought it’d be helpful to share a few updated tips for traveling around London, especially since things have changed a bit since we last visited six years ago.

The first thing we learned was how useful the Oyster card is for getting around. Since we didn’t rent a car (which we don’t recommend unless you’re planning to travel outside London), the Oyster card was a lifesaver. You can pick one up at any Underground station and add money as needed. One thing we wish we’d known was that you can get a digital Oyster card ahead of time, which saves a little hassle. Just remember, it costs extra to travel during rush hour, especially in the central zones, so plan accordingly.

Something else we noticed is how cashless London has become. On our last visit, we had to carry cash for certain things like public restrooms, but this time around, we didn’t even need cash for most things. Nearly every place takes cards, and even the public restrooms have been updated with more accessible options (though you might still encounter pay-to-enter facilities in certain spots like Camden Market). We only needed cash once, and even for tips, it’s not really expected, though we did tip our bus tour guide since he was fantastic.

Lastly, pubs here operate a bit differently than we’re used to back home. Each time you order a drink or food, you pay right then and there — no tabs! When ordering food, make sure to note your table number so they can bring your meal to the right spot. This setup is super convenient because you’re not tied to a tab, and it feels more relaxed overall. London has definitely changed a bit since our last visit, but with these tips, we hope your trip is a bit smoother!

Top Tips for London Travel:

  • Get an Oyster card at any Underground station for easy travel around the city; consider the digital option if you plan ahead.
  • Plan travel outside rush hour to save on public transportation fares.
  • Go cashless; most places accept cards, including some public restrooms, so there’s less need for cash.
  • Know the pub etiquette; order and pay at the bar, and remember to take note of your table number.
  • Ask for help if needed; Londoners are generally friendly and helpful!
