This past weekend, Chanda and I took a trip down to Cincinnati, one of our favorite places to visit. We had heard about a German Christmas Market, and since we couldn’t make it to Germany this year like we had originally planned, this seemed like the next best thing. The market was right next to a German brewery, so naturally, we had to stop in for a quick snack and some beer before exploring. The brewery, Moerlein Lager House, was fantastic – great atmosphere, delicious appetizers, and even better beer. If you’re ever in Cincinnati, I’d definitely recommend stopping by.
Once we made it to the market, I wasn’t sure what to expect. I figured it would be an Americanized version of the traditional German markets we had visited in the past. For the most part, it was, but as soon as we saw the food section, the nostalgia hit hard. They had glühwein – hot, spiced wine – which immediately brought back memories of our time in Germany. We also found raclette, which is basically melted cheese scraped onto bread or potatoes. We ordered some with ham on a baguette, and it was incredible. The potatoes with onions and cheese were just as good – warm, comforting, and exactly what I was craving.
One of the coolest parts was the small mugs they sold for glühwein. In Germany, every market has its own unique mug, and you can either return it for a refund or keep it as a souvenir. This market had the same concept, and the little mug we bought will sit right next to the one we brought back from Germany last year. It’s funny how something as simple as a cup can bring back so many memories.
By the end of the day, we were full, happy, and feeling all the holiday vibes. Everyone we met at the market was incredibly friendly, and the atmosphere just felt warm and festive. It wasn’t exactly the same as being in Germany, but it was close enough to bring back those wonderful memories. If you’re in the area during the holiday season, I’d definitely recommend checking it out.
