Flying Zipair: Budget Airline Secrets from LAX to Tokyo

Hey it’s Wes and Chanda and welcome to DinkLife. We’re sitting in LAX waiting for our flight to Tokyo, and we couldn’t help but reflect on how this very trip started our whole adventure years ago. Today we’re flying Zipair, Japan’s budget airline, and we wanted to share our experience and tips in case you’re considering this affordable option.

Zipair is often compared to Spirit or Frontier, but from our experience, it’s in a completely different league. The check-in process was smooth at LAX Terminal B, and unlike our last trip, they didn’t weigh or measure our carry-ons this time. But don’t assume that’ll always be the case—Zipair has strict weight limits, so pack smart just in case.

We chose different seating options this time: I booked a lie-flat seat because I struggle to sleep on planes, and Wes stayed in economy to save money. Even with no “bells and whistles” like other first-class products, the lie-flat seat was incredibly comfortable and came with one included meal. All other food and drinks are ordered online mid-flight and delivered right to your seat—quickly and reasonably priced.

Onboard, everything felt organized and efficient. From the QR code ordering system to the friendly crew, Zipair impressed us again. If you’re heading to Tokyo and want to save while still being comfortable, it’s worth considering. Remember, as always, whatever you decide to do, just get out there and do it!
