We Got In FREE at This Underrated Detroit Museum!

Hey it’s Wes and Chanda and welcome to DinkLife.

Today was a perfect example of unexpected travel magic. We headed into downtown Detroit planning to visit the Motown Museum, but it was swarming with people and nearly impossible to access. Luckily, we pivoted and found ourselves at the Detroit Historical Museum—and to our surprise, admission was free that day!

Not only did we save $10 each, but there was also a vintage car show happening right outside. From slammed Impalas with velvet interiors to hydraulics and wire wheels, the car culture was on full display. Inside the museum, we were blown away by how much Detroit’s history was captured so creatively—from the early days of the auto industry to pop culture, sports, civil rights, and even music legends.

We spent about two hours inside and could’ve easily stayed longer. Highlights included a 12-year-crafted clock, the old Boblo Island memories, and learning that the beaver is Detroit’s official symbol. We even had great conversations with a local and his visiting friends, who added even more context to what we were seeing.

So, if you’re ever in the Detroit area, don’t miss the Detroit Historical Museum. It might not be on the top tourist lists, but it’s absolutely worth your time. Remember, as always, whatever you decide to do, just get out there and do it!
