Hey it’s Wes and Chanda and welcome to DinkLife. We recently visited the Cleveland Art Museum for the final day of the Tekashi Murakami exhibit, “Stepping on the Tail of a Rainbow.” The exhibit ran from May through September 7th, and we barely made it! We had heard so many good things, and since we’re big fans of Japanese art, we knew we couldn’t miss it.
Admission was $30 per person, and parking cost $14 since we’re not museum members. Even though we only had time for the exhibit, the rest of the museum is free and definitely worth visiting. Inside, we were blown away by Murakami’s vibrant artwork. From 3D printed sculptures and oversized murals to cheeky floral skulls and surreal dogs, everything was full of detail and playful energy. The modern art vibes were strong, and it was fun to see so many references to Japanese pop culture and video games.
The gift shop had a split personality. Museum-made souvenirs were reasonably priced, but studio-made merch was another story—$250 t-shirts and $50 pins! It was cool to browse though, and everything was undeniably unique. We spent about an hour walking through the exhibit, which felt like just the right amount of time to soak everything in.
It’s a shame the exhibit has ended here, but if it travels near you, make time to go. We had a blast and left feeling inspired by Murakami’s creativity. Remember, as always, whatever you decide to do, just get out there
