Tonga Room Review: Legendary Tiki Bar or Total Tourist Trap

Hey its Wes and Chanda and welcome to Dinklife

On this trip to San Francisco, we finally checked the Tonga Room off our tiki bar bucket list. Located inside the Fairmont Hotel, this historic spot first opened in 1945 after the hotel converted its old swimming pool into one of the most famous tiki bars in the country. We had heard mixed reviews, but as tiki lovers, we had to see it for ourselves.

We made a last minute reservation and were so glad we did because the standby line was easily 50 people deep on a Saturday night. Inside, we experienced the famous indoor rainstorm, the floating band boat, and the massive tropical themed space. We ordered the My Tai Classic, the Divine Dragon, edamame, and plantain chips. Everything was good, but the drinks were about $25 each, which definitely added up quickly.

Parking around the hotel was stressful, and we learned quickly that reservations come with a hefty fee if you cancel. We also noticed that unlike most tiki bars we visit, this one allowed kids, which completely changes the vibe. It felt more like a tourist attraction than a cozy tiki hideaway.

In the end, we were glad we experienced it, but it was probably a one and done for us. It was fun to see the history and atmosphere, but for the price, we preferred other tiki bars in the city. Remember, as always, whatever you decide to do, just get out there and do it!
