We Finally Said Goodbye to Our Ugly 80s Kitchen – Video #1 – Floors

Hey its Wes and Chanda and welcome to Dinklife. We finally started a project we had talked about for quite a while, renovating our very 80s kitchen. We were not changing the layout or replacing our appliances, but nearly everything else was getting some attention. We planned new floors, countertops, cabinet finishes, hardware, lighting, and a few other changes to give the kitchen a more modern look. After meeting with several companies and doing plenty of research, we decided to split the project between different contractors while doing some of the prep work ourselves.

Phase one was all about getting ready for our new floor. To save some money, we handled quite a bit of the preparation ourselves. I patched problem areas in the ceiling and walls, painted the ceiling, removed the old trim and baseboards, moved the appliances, removed a cabinet that would eventually be replaced with open shelving, and installed new light fixtures. Some of those jobs might have seemed small, but every bit of work we did ourselves helped keep more money in our budget for other parts of the renovation.

Once everything was prepared, it was finally time to say goodbye to the old ceramic tile. Our installer put a skim coat over the existing tile to fill the grout lines and create a smooth surface. After allowing that to set, he installed our new wood look vinyl plank flooring. The entire process happened much faster than we expected. He arrived in the morning and was finished shortly after 1:00 that afternoon. The difference was immediate. The lighter flooring made the entire kitchen feel brighter, larger, and dramatically more modern.

We absolutely loved how phase one turned out, but there was still a lot more to come. The new floor gave us our first real glimpse of how different this kitchen was going to look when everything was finished. Next, we had to prepare for the countertops and continue working through our kitchen renovation one project at a time. We were excited to see whether the rest of the renovation would go as smoothly as the flooring did. Remember, as always, whatever you decide to do, just get out there and do it!
