Hey its Wes and welcome to Dinklife. I recently got my hands on the RG43V Pro retro gaming handheld after Rillo sent me a complimentary unit to review. I wanted to see what it was like straight out of the box, so I started with a full unboxing before spending some time playing games on it. The handheld had a 4.3 inch display with a 1024 by 768 resolution, and it came with a screen protector, instructions, and a USB C cable. My first impression was pretty positive. I liked the blue color, the screen looked great, and the handheld felt comfortable without being too heavy.
Once I started digging into the games, I found a surprisingly large library. Nintendo was pretty limited, but there were tons of Sega Genesis and Master System games, along with TurboGrafx 16, Neo Geo, arcade games, PlayStation 1, and even some PSP titles. I played games like 1942, Alien Crush, Ghouls ‘n Ghosts, Metal Slug X, Grand Theft Auto: Vice City Stories, and God of War. Vice City Stories ran surprisingly smoothly, while God of War struggled and had noticeable stuttering during gameplay. For the older 2D games, though, the RG43V Pro performed really well.
I also liked how easy the system was to use. The controls felt good, the screen was a nice size, and jumping in and out of games was simple. The buttons felt a little hollow and inexpensive in places, and the speaker was slightly heavy on the treble, but neither issue ruined the experience for me. The handheld got a little warm during longer sessions, but I never experienced anything that seemed like serious overheating. Battery life also seemed solid, especially while playing older 2D games. I could easily see myself tossing this into a bag and taking it somewhere when I wanted a quick retro gaming fix.
Overall, I really liked the RG43V Pro. At around $120, I thought it was a little expensive for what it was, especially with so many retro handhelds competing for your money. If I found it for around $100 or less, though, I would have had a much easier time recommending it. There was a lot packed into this little handheld, the display looked great, the controls worked well, and the included game selection gave me plenty to play right out of the box. If you love retro gaming and want something portable, I thought the RG45V Pro was definitely worth checking out. Remember, as always, whatever you decide to do, just get out there and do it!
