Hey its Wes and Chanda and welcome to Dinklife! We were finally getting closer to finishing our kitchen remodel, and this third part of our renovation series was all about tackling the finishing touches and giving our outdated kitchen a completely new look. I started by installing baseboard trim and quarter round using a borrowed pancake compressor and brad nailer. Since our new flooring had raised the floor height by about a quarter inch, I had to trim several pieces and make custom spacers for the thresholds. I also replaced the dated decorative piece above our kitchen sink, installed trim underneath the cabinets, and prepared everything for painting. It was a lot of detailed work, but seeing everything come together made it worthwhile.
One of the biggest improvements we made was replacing our old range hood with a modern model that featured better ventilation and LED lighting. I removed the original hood, disconnected the wiring after shutting off the power, and installed the new one with Chanda’s help. We also added new shelving where our old microwave cabinet used to be, which opened up the kitchen and gave us a much more comfortable eating area. Another convenient upgrade was converting one of our existing cabinets into a pull out trash bin. Once all the trim was installed, sanded, and cleaned, we were finally ready for the painters to begin transforming the kitchen with our new color choices.
We decided to go with a bold combination of dark grape purple walls, white upper cabinets, and dark gray lower cabinets. We were excited to see how everything would look together, but the painting process ended up being a much bigger adventure than we expected! What was originally supposed to take about four days stretched into an entire month because of communication problems, delays with cabinet components, and other unexpected issues. During that time, our kitchen was completely torn apart, with everything from the cabinets scattered throughout the house. It definitely tested our patience, but we kept looking forward to seeing the finished results.
When everything was finally completed, we were thrilled with how much the kitchen had changed! The freshly painted cabinets looked fantastic, and the new soft closing doors and drawers made everything feel much more modern. Chanda found some vintage Sears cabinet pulls from around the 1950s or 1960s, which added a fun retro touch that worked perfectly with our design. The purple walls gave the room a unique personality, and the updated shelving, range hood, and trim really pulled everything together. Even though the process took longer than expected, we were happy with the transformation. We still had one final project ahead of us, installing the tile backsplash ourselves, which would wrap up our kitchen renovation series. Thanks for following along with our project, and we hoped our experience gave you some inspiration for your own home improvements. Remember, as always, whatever you decide to do, just get out there and do it!
